Dear Athletic Directors,
As Ohio moves forward with the process of re-opening the state, we all are waiting to hear about schools and sports in the fall. I don’t think it is clear to any of us that either will go on in the usual fashion.
At the moment, we aren’t sure what to expect in the coming school year, both academically and athletically. We are following the developments at the state level closely, and are keeping in mind how these developments affect the need/ability to proceed with sports pre-participation examinations.
If the inter-scholastic sports schedule proceeds in some way, we expect the OHSAA to continue to require pre-participation examinations to allow student-athletes to participate. With the uncertainty about when school building will re-open; how many people we will be allowed to congregate in one place; how we will be able to clean surfaces, etc. we don’t feel able to give you an idea as to how we will carry out preparticipation examinations this spring/summer.
Considering this, we think it would be reasonable at this time, to encourage your students and parents to pursue pre-participation examinations with their primary care doctors at their convenience. These can also be performed at Cleveland Clinic express care locations; as well as in the offices of our Cleveland Clinic Akron General sports medicine physicians.
If and when schools open, sports are happening, and we are able to safely and within the state guidelines, perform group sports physicals, we intend to contact you to work out how and when these can occur. We also intend to work closely with you to make the environment for your student athletes, and staff during the sports seasons as safe and enjoyable as possible.
